SODECOTON expects Cameroon cotton output to rise 30%

Cameroon’s Cotton Development Company (SODECOTON) is expecting the country’s cotton production to rise to about 235,000 tons, about 30 percent more than 180,000 tons of cotton produced last season.

More than 200,000 tons of cotton has already been sold by farmers, according to the National Confederation of Cotton Producers of Cameroon (CNPCC) and SODECOTON.

The expected rise in cotton production is in spite of rain playing havoc soon after the sowing season.

At the beginning of the 2012-13 season, Cameroon’s cotton production was expected to be around 240,000 tons. However, after the subsequent heavy rains it was feared that the country’s cotton output would be much less than the initial estimate.

Cotton cultivation decreased in Cameroon around six years ago, as farmers shifted to growing other more profitable items.

The growth in cotton production this season is due to supportive policies implemented by the Government.
