The Government of China’s temporary cotton procurement and storage plan, launched on September 7 last year by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the Ministry of Finance, has come to a halt.

According to NDRC, under the 2012-13 plan, a total of 6.342 million tons of cotton was procured, of which, 3.933 million tons was bought from Xinjiang, while another 2.409 million tons was purchased from inland region.

The purchase of cotton is quite close to China’s production of 6.84 million tons in 2012-13 season, as per the estimates of the National Bureau of Statistics.

China Cotton Association, however, pegs the country’s cotton output for 2012-13 season at 7.164 million tons.
