The International Trade Centre (ITC), a subsidiary of the World Trade Organization and the United Nations, is planning to develop and strengthen direct links between buyers in India and cotton growers and ginners in Africa.

It is important to develop direct links between cotton ginners and spinners so as to improve the quality of cotton and also to boost trade volume between the two regions, Matthias Knappe, ITC Programme Manager (Cotton, Textiles and Clothing), who is driving the ‘Target Asia’ mission aimed at promoting African Cotton, said.

During a meeting with some members of the Indian Cotton Federation and spinners in the southern Indian city of Coimbatore, Mr. Knappe said to launch the programme, they are not targeting a large number of spinners, rather just a few, who are actually interested in buying African cotton.

He said though Indian market is not a new one for African cotton growers, ITC aims to help African nations to boost their cotton exports to India.

In addition to this, ITC also proposes to organize the visit of spinners from Thailand and Bangladesh to Western Africa in December this year, he added.

However, he forewarned spinners to keep at bay from signing deals with African ginners, till they know them or get to meet them personally.
