Overview of China's silk industry performance in 2012

The operation of China’s cocoon and silk industry steadily improved last year. Cocoon production increased by 3.08 percent year-on-year to 687,000 tons in 2012. Cocoon sales grew by 4.62 percent year-on-year to 632,000 tons. 
 
The average price of cocoon in 2012 was 1772 yuan for a dan of 50 kg each, showing an increase of 3.21 percent year-on-year, according to the China Silk Association.
 
The 362 large-scale silk enterprises in China together produced 126,000 tons of raw silk last year, registering a rise of 16.61 percent year-on-year.
 
The production of spun silk rose significantly by 55.72 percent year-on-year to 12,500 tons. Similarly, the output of silk fabrics grew by 12.78 percent year-on-year to 696.96 million metres, while silk quilts output skyrocketed by 203.76 percent year-on-year to 62.15 million pieces.
 
In 2012, China exported silk goods worth US$ 3.434 billion, a marginal rise of 2.96 percent year-on-year.
 
At the end of last year, the price of dried cocoon was quoted around 118,100 yuan/ton, up 13.7 percent compared to the price at the beginning of the year. During the same period, the price of raw silk (3A) increased by 20.4 percent to 364,000 yuan/ton.
 
Chinese silk industry witnessed a good start in 2013, with both the profit situation and exports showing a rise in the first two months.
