A National Silk Board (NSB) of Cambodia will be formed under the Ministry of Commerce to chalk out a framework for the country’s silk industry which lacks proper organization of the silk weavers.

Cambodian Minister of Commerce, Cham Prasidh, said the Board is expected to come up with a set of regulations for various aspects of the Cambodian silk industry, soon after the country’s general elections conclude in late July, according to a phnompenhpost.com.

Mr. Prasidh said the planned framework will help to create a certified process to boost the quality of silk produced in the country, coordinate public-private sector partnerships and start up a procedure to record all the necessary information related to the Cambodian silk industry.

Silk trade is among the top priorities in the Trade Sector Wide Approach (Trade SWAp) initiative and the formation of the new board will help to promote the silk trade, the Minister added.

Once the Ministry of Commerce approves the plans presented by the Trade SWAp, a Government initiative to boost trade in Cambodia, the NSB will help to develop trade of the country’s native Khmer silk, said Mr. Prasidh.

Developing the Cambodian silk industry will also support the women engaging in silk weaving. The industry employs about 20,000 silk weavers, mainly women, and contributes US$ 25 million to the country’s GDP.
