Aksu Prefecture located in mid-western Xinjiang province of China, also known as ‘cotton town’, has imported cotton for the first time, owing to climate, price, and other factors.

In June this year, Aksu Prefecture got its first import of nearly 500 tons of cotton, valued at US$ 1.603 million, according to Akzo Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau.

Prior to 2010, cotton was exported in large quantities from Aksu, but in recent years domestic cotton prices have run high due to the rising labour costs, financial crisis and other factors, and hence there was no export of cotton for three years.

Owing to lower prices, domestic textile enterprises chose to import US cotton for the first time this year. At present, importing cotton from the US costs about 2,000 yuan/ton lower than domestic cotton, and if the trend continues, Aksu region’s cotton imports will further increase, according to experts.

Aksu region has a warm temperature with dry climatic conditions and scarce rainfall, which is ideal for cotton cultivation. Cotton produced in the region accounts for one-tenth of all cotton grown in Xinjiang.
