The Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) has established a special ‘China Focus Cell’ to enhance bilateral trade relations, following the recent visit of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s visit to China.

The setting up of the new cell would help in further promoting Pakistani products in the Chinese market, including textiles and garments.

The China Focus Cell, to be headed by director general (Marketing Division – Asia), would highlight trade opportunities for Pakistan in China.

It is also expected to act as a catalyst in boosting trade by coordinating with relevant stakeholders.

Pakistan exports to China increased from US$ 0.7 billion in 2008-09 to US$ 1.153 billion in 2009-10, showing a growth of 64.59%, according to TDAP website.

China is currently the fourth largest export market of Pakistan, while Pakistan’s share in China’s import is negligible.

Cotton yarn and cotton fabric are among the main products exported by Pakistan to China.

Pakistan’s trade with China increased after the first phase of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) took effect in July 2007. The second phase of the FTA started this year.

The development of Kashgar-Gwadar Economic Corridor is also expected to bring tremendous bilateral trade opportunities, especially between China’s North-western region and Gwadar Baltistan region of Pakistan.
