Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina held a meeting with representatives of the Association of the Textile and Apparel Industry (VESTEX), to take stock of the present situation of the productive sector, which generates over 90,000 jobs, and also contributes to the country’s foreign exchange earnings.

Post-meeting, Minister of Economy Sergio de la Torre told reporters that the meeting was part of the President’s effort to improve domestic economy, for which he is meeting with representatives of various productive sectors of the economy, with the objective of finding mechanisms to create jobs and improve the earnings of Guatemalan families.

“The Government is focused on continuing promotion of initiatives to generate employment opportunities, and in only 18 months since the present Government took office it has created 200,000 new direct jobs, the Minister said citing data from the Social Security Institute.

Mr. Antonio Maluf, who met the President on behalf of VESTEX, said Mr. Molina discussed in detail the situation of the textile and apparel sector.

The President said Government’s support would generate more jobs in the sector, Mr. Maluf added.

According to VESTEX, Guatemalan textile and clothing sector is currently passing through a transformation phase and there would be gradual increase in jobs, along with growth in exports.

The Guatemalan textile and garment sector has capacity to create 150,000 direct jobs, according to VESTEX projections.

In 2012, Guatemala earned US$ 1.4 billion in foreign exchange through exports of textiles and garments, Mr. Maluf said.
