Brazilian families buy textiles worth $102bn in 2012

Families in Brazil spent US$ 102 billion on textile and apparel products in the year 2012, according to a survey conducted by the Brazilian Association of Textile Retail (ABVTEX) through the Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV).
 
The expenditure represents 3.7 percent of total spending in Brazilian families in 2012.
 
According to the data, of the total expenditure on textiles, 45 percent of the costs relate to the purchase of items for women, 36 percent is related to the articles purchased for men, 17 percent is children’s items and 2 percent is textiles and haberdashery articles. 
 
By region, the statistics indicated that the Southeast region of Brazil led the expenses, with a 46.3 percent expenditure on textile products, followed by the Northeast (20.6 percent), South (18.9 percent), North (7.2 percent) and Midwest (6.9 percent). 
 
The survey pointed out that the Gross Domestic Project (GDP) of Brazil’s textile chain in 2012, reached US$ 38.3 billion.
 
According to the Institute for Retailing Development (IDV), the productivity gains achieved in recent years should serve as a natural platform to enhance diversification and sophistication of products offered to consumers.
