The Dominican Association of Textile Industries (ADITEX) has reported that more than 1,000 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the country have installed technical capacity and know-how for manufacturing textiles volumes required by the decree issued by the Government of Dominican Republic.

David Cortes, President of ADITEX, said the allocation of textile procurement would increase the number of jobs from 5,000 to 20,000 in the medium term as well as create a more dynamic economy with consequent acquisition of materials and supplies, and motivate hundreds of MSMEs, reports Dominican newspaper Listin Diario.

According to the report, the Decree No. 164-13, issued in June 2013, instructs public institutions to source and purchase clothing from the MSMEs in the country, as long as they can provide them.

Mr. Cortes said if the public institutions comply with the terms of the decree there would be a real economic revolution in the country which would benefit large segments of the society.

An estimated 200 domestic enterprises of textile manufacturers would receive orders if the Ministry of Education buys clothing, including pants, shirts, backpacks and half-pants from the MSMEs.

Mr. Cortes added that the textile manufacturers in the country possess the ability to produce clothing adequate to fulfill the requirements of all ministries and decentralized institutions of the country.
