Pajchima Tanasanti, director-general of the Intellectual Property Department, said the agency had requested GI certification from Vietnam’s National Office of Intellectual Property, reports The Nation, Thailand.

Ms. Tanasanti said Thai silk, which is produced in north-east Thailand, has a unique texture and the GI certification would help to promote it as well as bring an added value to the farmers and producers of indigenous silk in the country.

The department has not sought for GI certification of Thai silk from the European Union, as such moves had been focused on agricultural products only, she added.
