The Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xinjiang, has started a project in the Central Asian country of Tajikistan for integrated pest management (IPM) in cotton fields.

Over the next three year period, Chinese scientists will improvise the Xinjiang cotton IPM technology for adjusting it to Tajikistan’s climate.

Lu Zhaozhi, researcher at the Chinese Academy, said Xinjiang is the world’s most important high-quality cotton producing area, because of its efficient integrated pest prevention system, along with high-yield and efficient water-saving technology.

Tajikistan’s natural environment and southern China’s Xinjiang region have great similarities, but in recent years, pests have caused serious harm to cotton in Tajikistan, and greatly hampered the development of cotton industry in that country.

During their three-year stay, Chinese researchers would build 10-12 pest monitoring stations, which would give early warning, and help in prevention and control of pests by developing biological and physical control techniques.

Moreover, they would also train scientific personnel in Tajikistan in integrated cotton pest control management.
