Dow showcases innovation at World Chemistry Congress

Organized by the Turkish Chemical Society and International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (UPAC), and addressing the theme of “Clean Energy through Chemistry,” the congress was attended by more than 2,000 recognized scientists, academia and students from the fields of chemistry and material science.

Invited speaker Ihsan Necipoglu, General Manager of Dow Turkey and Central Asian Republics, presented “The Chemical Industry and Innovation – Through Science and Actions” on the second day of the congress. In his remarks, Necipoglu addressed the many opportunities chemistry offers.

“Today, the chemical industry has a great opportunity – through our actions and innovations – to not only play a role in solving the world’s greatest challenges … but to play an indispensable role,” said Necipoglu.

“Successful innovation is not just about developing new solutions. Innovation includes new, more resource and cost-efficient processes for existing solutions, or new ways of solving old problems,” he continued. “At Dow we call this creative mindset ‘Solutionism’ – a belief that together, science and humanity can solve anything. Our world’s increasing needs will lead us to new collaborative innovation partnerships. Dow regularly collaborates with universities, industrial partners and NGOs, and we have learned through these collaborations that innovation lies not just in the product, but in the process.”

The World Chemistry Congress was a fitting stage for Dow to further the discussion on innovation in the chemical industry. Dow employs 6,800 researchers worldwide and continues to invest in meaningful science-based innovation. In 2012, Dow R&D patents were up more than 31 percent over the previous year – their highest levels since the 1990’s.

In support of its global focus on diversity and inclusion, Dow was also proud to support the Distinguished Women in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering award which acknowledges and promotes the work of women chemists and chemical engineers worldwide.
