India’s Minister of Textiles, K Sambasiva Rao, has assured that the Ministry would be taking up the issue of imposition of ‘anti-dumping duty’ on certain textile products, where it is badly needed, with the Ministry of Finance (MoF).

Mr. Rao made the announcement while interacting with the representatives of Ludhiana Integrated Textile Park and Knitwear Club, in the presence of Manish Tewari, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting.

The Minister said that he along with Mr. Tewari would be taking up the issue of textile goods entering the country at undervalued prices from China, Indonesia and Bangladesh, with the Ministry of Finance.

Mr. Rao also announced that Ludhiana will be shortly having its own National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), which would enable the city to meet with the shortage of trained personnel for 13,000-odd knitwear enterprises in the region.

The Minister further stated that some issues related to imports of textiles have been resolved by the Government and he expects the textiles sector to perform better and contribute more in terms of foreign exchange. The steps taken by the Government include removal of Central Excise Duty on certain items.

The Minister also promised to take up the issue of warehousing facilities in major Latin American countries.
