Spanish textile production plummets 15.1% in Aug'13

The production of textile industry in Spain registered a decline of 15.1 percent year-on-year, for the month of August, 2013, as per the latest Industrial Production Index (IPI) data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

According to the INE data, the decline in the textile production is the highest drop recorded so far this year, and is contradictory to the 6.2 percent rise observed during the month of July, 2013.

The IPI in the manufacture of apparel sector has also declined by 10.3 percent, for the month of August 2013, compared to the same period last year.

The IPI of the entire Spanish industry for the month of August also declined by 0.4 percent year-on-year, which is contrast to the 0.6 percent increase registered in the month of July, 2013.

Sub-sector wise the IPI declined in manufacturing of fashion apparel by 28.2 percent year-on-year, for the month of August, in the knitted garments sector by 26.9 percent year-on-year, the preparation of spinning textile fibers dipped by 23.9 percent, manufacture of other textiles fell by 14 percent, and manufacture of wearing apparel, except fur, declined by 10.2 percent year-on-year.

Meanwhile, according to the INE data, the IPI in manufacturing of articles of fur saw an increase of 82.1 percent in the month of August, compared to the same period last year, and the IPI in textile finishing also rose 4.3 percent year-on-year during the same month.

The IPI measures the monthly progress and productivity of industries, including extractive industries and the manufacturing sector. This indicator reflects only the quantity and quality of production, eliminating the influence of prices. This methodology is fully harmonized with the European Union countries.
