The imports of cotton by China decreased sharply in September 2013, according to the data released by the China Cotton Association based on customs statistics.

In September, China imported 201,300 tons of cotton, registering a decline of 23.4 year-on-year, and a drop of 27 percent on a month-on-month basis.

The average cotton import price during the month was US$ 2,196 per ton, an increase of US$ 5 per ton compared to last month’s price, but a decline of 6.8 percent from a year earlier.

From January to September this year, China’s total cotton imports stood at 3.226 million tons, showing a rise of 19.9 percent year-on-year.

China’s cotton season runs from September to August, and during the 2012-13 season, China imported 4.396 million tons, registering a drop of 19.2 percent year-on-year.

One of the reasons for decline in Chinese cotton imports is an increase in cotton yarn imports in recent months. During the first half of this year, China imported 964,700 tons of cotton yarn, registering an increase of 45.88 percent year-on-year.
