The textile sector generates about 6 billion soles in added value and it currently contributes 10 percent to the nation’s manufacturing Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 1.5 percent to National Domestic Product (NDP), Peru’s Minister of Production Gladys Triveno said at the Expotextil Fair 2013 that saw participation of more than 200 exhibitors, according to an official statement.

The Minister emphasized that the Peruvian textile sector is inclusive as it allows participation of all sizes of companies and employs 27 percent of the economically active population (EAP) engaged in Peru’s manufacturing sector.

The Peruvian textile and garment sector comprises of 34,370 formal enterprises, of which 94 percent are micro enterprises, 5 percent are small businesses, and 0.7 percent are medium and large companies.

Ms. Triveno congratulated the organizers of the fair and said that the fair would contribute in helping the domestic textile and apparel industry overcome the difficulties posed due to contraction of the Venezuelan market and the slow recovery of American market.

Under the MYPeru initiative, the Government managed to buy 5.3 million garments, such as school uniforms and uniforms for the National Police, from Micro and Small Enterprises (MSE), the Minister said.

“The benefit is not only for the MSE, but also for suppliers of inputs and services that come from the domestic industry," she said.

She informed that the demand for military clothing and hospital clothing this year is 668,000 pieces, which would require an investment of 16.8 million soles, and creates a great opportunity for MSEs in the country.
