BWMB's regional Chairman pensive about Welsh wool farming

Over the last 10 years the Welsh sheep industry had absorbed significant cost increases, including fallen stock disposal, electronic identification and increased feed, fuel and fertiliser costs which had yet to be passed back to consumers, he added

"Further pressure on sheep farming profitability from any quarter would have a damaging impact on the viability of the Welsh sheep sector."

Montgomeryshire representative on the Welsh BWMB regional committee Steve Smith said it was important policy makers, retailers and consumers understood the fine balance between success and failure for the Welsh sheep industry. "The latest round of CAP reform has huge potential to support and build a sustainable sheep industry for the future, failure to put in place the right measures will see the fossilization of the hills and the rural communities that rely on it."

"Welsh counties such as Montgomeryshire have produced quality stock in quantity and I do not want those that have actively farmed and improved the land to be at a disadvantage as a result of the latest CAP reform."
