Ethylene prices continue to slide in Japan

The prices of ethylene continued to decrease in Japan and were assessed at US$ 1290/ton FOB Japan on November 21, 2013. The average price for the last fortnight ending November 15 was US$ 1305/ton, a decrease of 1.51 percent compared to the previous fortnight’s average price of US$ 1325/ton.

However, on a year-on-year basis, the price of ethylene in Japan surged by over 9 percent, as the average price in November 2012 prevailed at around US$ 1195/ton.

In Asian markets, ethylene prices declined due to bearish upstream energy value coupled with weak buying sentiments during the last fortnight ending November 15, 2013.

In Far East Asia, the average price of ethylene declined by 2.59 percent to US$ 1315/ton in the last fortnight ending November 15, compared to the average price of US$ 1350/ton in the fortnight ending October 31.

In Southeast Asian countries, the average price of ethylene was US$ 1425/ton in the last fortnight, a decline of 1.72 percent over previous fortnight’s average price of US$ 1450/ton. The downtrend continued further and price was assessed at US$ 1415/ton on November 21.

In European markets, too, ethylene prices fell during the fortnight ending November 15, due to ample product availability in the region. The average price for the fortnight was US$ 1245/ton, showing a dip of 3.86 percent compared to average price of US$ 1295/ton in the previous fortnight.

On the other hand, average ethylene price increased by 9.57 percent to 51.5 cents/pound in the US market last fortnight, compared to average price of 47 cents/pound in the fortnight ending October 31.
