Ethylene prices increase in Europe and US last fortnight

The prices of ethylene, a raw material used in the manufacturing of polyester, increased in the European and the US markets during the last fortnight ending December 15, 2013, due to firm energy market and a surge in feedstock prices.

In Asian markets, however, ethylene prices showed a mixed trend due to tight product availability in the region coupled with firm upstream energy value, during the same fortnight.

In Europe, the average ethylene price in the fortnight ending December 15 was US$ 1240/ton, showing an increase of 2.06 percent over the average price of US$ 1215/ton recorded in the previous fortnight ending November 30. The price further increased and was assessed at US$ 1255/ton on December 19.

Ethylene contractual prices for December settled at € 1225/ton FD N W Europe, which represents a rise of € 30/ton from November levels.

In the US market, average ethylene price increased by 2.78 percent to 55.50 cents/pound in the last fortnight ending December 15, as compared to the average price of 54.00 cents/pound in the previous fortnight.

In S E Asia, average price of ethylene decreased by 0.35 percent to US$ 1410/ton in the last fortnight, as compared to the average price of US$ 1415/ton in the previous fortnight. However, price increased again and was quoted at US$ 1440/ton on December 19.

In F E Asia, average price of ethylene was US$ 1330/ton last fortnight, up 1.92 percent compared to the previous fortnight’s average price of US$ 1305/ton.

In Japan, average ethylene price in the last fortnight was US$ 1320/ton, which is an increase of 12.13 percent compared to the average price of US$ 1175/ton during the same fortnight of last year. The price rose by 1.35 percent in the last fortnight, as against the average price of US$ 1300/ton in the fortnight ending November 30, 2013.
