Turkey exports carpets worth $2.196bn in 2013: ITKIB

Carpet exports from Turkey totaled US$ 2.196 billion in 2013, indicating a surge of 9.3 percent compared to 2012, as per the data released by the Istanbul Textile and Apparel Exporters’ Association (ITKIB).

According to the ITKIB data, the country exported carpets worth $2.196 billion in the last twelve months, which is a rise of 9.3 percent compared to the $2 billion carpet exports made in 2012.

The carpet exports from Turkey during last year accounted for 1.45 percent of the overall exports made from the country.

The highest exports came from machine-made carpets, which soared by 10.1 percent year-on-year, totaling $2.055 billion in 2013, whereas exports from the hand-made carpets declined by 5.1 percent to $134.446 million last year.

Saudi Arabia remained the main destination for carpet exports from Turkey, accounting for 14.7 percent of the country’s carpet exports in 2013. However, carpet exports from Turkey to Saudi Arabia declined by 3.5 percent year-on-year to $321.94 million during last year.

The US maintained second position, with Turkey exporting carpets worth $220.7 million to the country last year, followed by Libya with $206.4 million, Iraq with $187.9 million, and Germany with $108.9 million during 2013.

As per the ITKIB data, in the month of December 2013 alone, Turkey exported carpets worth $202.94 million, indicating a rise of 7.8 percent, compared to the same month in 2012.
