Italian yarn exports touch €912mn in 2013: SMI

Exports of yarn from Italy (which includes cotton and wool yarn), amounted to €912 million during 2013, indicating a decline of 1.8 percent year-on-year, as per the data released by the Sistema Moda Italia (SMI), Italy’s Fashion System as well as association of textile entrepreneurs.

According to the Italian Spinning Industry 2013-14 report of SMI, the total exports of yarn including cotton and woolen yarn, fetched €912 million in 2013, compared to the €929 million yarn exports made in 2012.

Meanwhile, in terms of imports, the country imported yarn worth €834 million during 2013, indicating a decline of 2 percent, compared to the €851 million worth of yarn imported during 2012.

As per the SMI data, during 2013, the Italian yarn industry’s turnover touched €3.04 billion, recording a decrease of 2.1 percent year-on-year.

Sub-sector wise, as per the data available for the period from January to September 2013, released by SMI, Italy exported carded wool yarn worth €173 million, combed wool yarn worth €202 million, synthetic yarn worth €90 million, knitted yarn worth €75 million, cotton yarn worth €144 million and flax yarn (linen) worth €20 million during the first nine months of 2013, reaching an overall total of €705 million exports of yarn from the country, in January to September.

Hong Kong remained the main destination for exports of carded and combed wool yarn from Italy, with the country accounting for 26.3 percent and 17.2 percent of overall exports of carded and combed wool yarn during the January to September period.

Germany was the main destination for exports of cotton yarn from Italy with, the country accounting for 14.1 percent of the overall Italian cotton yarn exports during the first nine months of 2013, whereas Turkey ranked first for Italian exports of synthetic yarn with the country accounting for 17.7 percent of the total synthetic yarn exports from Italy during January to September last year.
