Turkey's leather exports touch $1.9bn in 2013

Turkey exported leather and leather products worth US$ 1.9 billion last year, indicating a surge of 16.4 percent compared to 2012, as per the data released by the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM) and the Istanbul Textile and Apparel Exporters Association (ITKIB).

According to the TIM Export Data of December 2013, Turkey exported leather and leather goods worth $1.9 billion in 2013, whereas the country exported leather and leather articles worth $1.6 billion during 2012.

Turkish leather and leather goods exports accounted for 1.3 percent of the overall exports made from the country during 2013. The highest exports were made from the leather shoes category with exports worth $730 million during last year indicating a rise of 32.4 percent year-on-year.

According to the TIM data, Russia was the main destination for exports of leather and leather products from Turkey with the country exporting $508 million worth of leather to Russia during 2013, accounting for 26.7 percent of the total leather exports from Turkey.

Italy ranked second with Turkey exporting leather and leather products worth $131.6 million during last year, accounting for 6.9 percent of the overall leather exports from the country, followed by Germany with $114.6 million, Iraq with $113.9 million, China with $81.2 million, Lithuania with $74.8 million, and France with $72.1 million.

As per the data, majority of leather and leather products exports were destined to countries in the European Union (EU) as the region accounted for 33.9 percent of total leather exports from Turkey during 2013.
