Bangladesh govt plans modernization of four jute mills

The Government of Bangladesh is planning to modernize four jute mills under the Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC), Textiles and Jute Minister Muhammad Imajuddin Pramanik said in the Parliament, BSS reported.
 
Replying to a query, the Minister said project proposals for modernization of three of these four mills have already been sent to the Planning Commission for approval.
 
The four projects are modernization of Karnaphuli Jute Mills at a cost of Tk 247.071 million, modernization of Forat Karnaphuli Carpet Factory at a cost of Tk 168.697 million, and modernization of Amin Jute Mills and UMC Jute Mills at a combined cost of Tk 1.942 billion.
 
In reply to another question, the Minister informed the House that a total of 505,556 handlooms were in operation across the country, as per 2003 handloom census.
 
The country’s handloom industry produces about 83 million metres of fabric annually and meets about 60 percent of domestic demand, the Minister said.
 
He further informed that the Government has initiated several projects to achieve the goals of the 6th and 7th Five Year Plans, including opening of three service centres in the handloom dominated areas, training centres in 23 basic centres and fashion design institutes.
