The Cotton Association of India (CAI) has pegged the country’s cotton production for the ongoing season 2013-14 at 38.35 million bales of 170 kg each, Business Standard reported quoting PTI.

The latest CAI estimate is marginal increase over its last month’s estimate of 38.125mn bales of 170 kg. This is due to expectation of better output from two leading cotton growing states of Gujarat and Maharashtra.

As on April 30, 2014, about 34.175 million bales of cotton arrived in the market and less than 10 percent of the crop is yet to arrive during the ongoing season that ends on September 30, 2014, the report said.

Cotton crop in Gujarat is likely to touch 12 million bales in 2013-14, as against the previous season’s production of 8.325 million bales, the CAI said.

Likewise, in Maharashtra, the total cotton output is estimated to increase from 7.25 million bales in 2012-13 season to 7.725 million bales in the current season, the CAI data showed.

Cotton consumption by domestic textile mills in 2013-14 season is expected to be around 29.5 million bales, according to the CAI.

In 2012-13 cotton year, India produced 35.675 million bales of cotton.
