Pakistan and Japan must work towards signing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) for enhancing bilateral trade relations between the two nations in various sectors, including textiles, said All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) Punjab chairman SM Tanveer, during a recent visit of Japanese Ambassador to Pakistan Hiroshi Inomata to the APTMA office in Lahore.

The APTMA Punjab chairman expressed concern over the dwindling trade between the two countries and said that both the Governments must take the matter seriously, reports Business Recorder.

According to the APTMA official, Pakistan imports textile machinery from Japan and in order to continue importing, Pakistani textile entrepreneurs require visa facility from the country.

Mr. Tanveer briefed the Japanese Ambassador about the various initiatives taken up by APTMA in order to increase the textile exports from the country from US$ 13 billion to $26 billion by 2018, reaping benefits from the Generalized System of Preferences Plus (GSP+) status granted by the European Union.

On his part, the Japanese envoy said the two countries share extremely close bilateral trade relations, especially since Pakistan had helped Japan in its economic revival after World War II.

According to Mr. Inomata, the Japanese Government has been extending assistance to the country through various forums, such as the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and others.

Earlier this month, Pakistan’s Minister of Commerce Khurram Dastagir Khan informed APTMA members that the Government of Pakistan had initiated a dialogue with Japan regarding the FTA, which is likely to be signed soon.
