The Cotton Association of India (CAI) has upwardly revised the country’s cotton production for the ongoing season 2013-14 to 38.82 million bales of 170 kg each, from its last month’s estimate of 38.35 million bales, moneycontrol.com reports quoting PTI.

As on May 31, 2014, about 37.02 million bales of cotton arrived in the market during the ongoing season that began on October 1, 2013, according to the CAI.

In western state of Gujarat, the CAI estimated cotton crop this season at 12.08 million bales, compared to the previous season’s production of 8.325 million bales.

Likewise, in Maharashtra, the total cotton output is estimated to increase from 7.25 million bales in 2012-13 season to 7.92 million bales in the current season, the CAI data showed.

In 2013-14 season, the total cotton supply is estimated at 44.75 million bales, while consumption by domestic textile mills is pegged at 29.5 million bales, leaving a surplus of 15.25 million bales.

Regions with smaller acreage like Karnataka and lower Rajasthan have seen remarkable improvement in yield this season, the CAI said.

As these regions fast catch up with other high yielding regions in terms of yield, it would help India achieve the world average productivity level, it added.

In 2012-13 cotton year, India produced 35.675 million bales of cotton.
