NY NOW program to showcase sustainability at summer market

“Green” home and lifestyle resources, in categories including personal care, juvenile products, home and personal accessories, will be featured in the Sustainability: design for a better world program at the summer 2014 edition of NY NOW, the Market for Home + Lifestyle, August 16-20, 2014, at New York City's Jacob K. Javits Center and Passenger Ship Terminal Pier 94. This NY NOW initiative, now in it's fifth year, includes a juried product display and the Eco Choice Awards recognizing innovative, sustainable product design.
 
The SustainAbility display will feature more than 200+ products from some 75 NY NOW exhibitors, all of which were selected for meeting established criteria, including the use of eco-friendly products and production processes, as well as socially responsible, philanthropic or fair-trade oriented business practices. The display also will showcase products and artisan producers from Artisan Resource, a tradeshow matching artisanal craft producers and production resources with U.S.-based volume importers, direct import retailers and wholesalers, which runs concurrently with NY NOW, August 16-19, 2014, at the Passenger Ship Terminal’s Pier 94.
 
“There’s been an increase in responsible personal care products for the entire family, as consumers are seeking healthy choices for themselves and their children,” said display curator Ilene Shaw of Shaw + Co! Productions. “Additionally, more companies are offering innovative green toys, body care and clothing for kids.”
 
The summer 2014 SustainAbility exhibit includes products from a wide variety of categories. Select products include: Cedar Olive Oil Soap by 80 Acres of McEvoy Ranch; 100% organic cotton “Adele” bedding by Bella Notte Linens; Blithe and Bonny Eco-DishSOAP packaged in repurposed wine bottles; the “Plait” necklace by Delight London made of rubber bands and recycled skateboard bearings; the Sweetgrass basket collection by Harry Barker made from recycled plastic bottles; and the “Mini-Monster Extreme Expedition” car and track set by Maple Landmark Woodcraft made of sustainable hardwood maple. 
 
Additionally, the display will include a memorial product vignette featuring works designed by the late Miguel Calvo. Calvo, who passed away unexpectedly this spring, was an independent designer and consultant, as well as an Accent on Design participant and juror. His work had been presented at fairs worldwide through companies including Aid to Artisans (Metallic Cup with Wayuu Weaving and Recycled Tire Fruit Holder produced in Colombia) and Gallery 91 (Cell Unit  Modular Shelving, Kampai Cup, Side Table with Long Pole and Candle Holder manufactured in Japan). He designed interiors for leading showrooms, restaurants and attractions for clients such as Baccarat, Scion/ Toyota and Prescriptives cosmetics.
 
The semi-annual Eco Choice Awards will return as an extension of the SustainAbility display. Popular vote will determine favorite products in three categories: “Most Innovative,” “Most Sensitive Use of Materials” and “Most Sellable.” 
 
Ten finalists in each of these three categories will be featured during the month of July in an online voting gallery, www.giftshopmag.com/votegreen. Winners of the awards, which are sponsored by NY NOW and GREENRetailer, will be announced in advance of the August market and profiled in the Fall 2014 issue of GIFTSHOP magazine.
