Many weaves had patterns with trompe l’oeil optical effects, micro-weaves and summer shadow checks including gingham designs. Summer knitwear also included Cool Wool styles, in soft Merino, in creams, light pastels and jersey layers, as at Wool Rich, Johnstons of Elgin and Alan Paine. The star attraction of the week, the Z Zegna show, hot-ticket at the Stazione Leopolda, which as an ex-railway shed was a fittingly industrial setting for an urban look at modern design. It featured Merino wool suits and other garments stunningly put through their paces on scaffolding behind a wire screen, where lithe models wearing the collection performed a complex set of gymnastic moves wearing jackets, trousers, suits and coats. This dramatically demonstrated the stretch and natural ease of movement provided by the wool designs which constituted a large part of the fabrication.
