Kalaty reveals three tips to define space with area rugs

Kalaty Rug Corporation, a national area rug specialist headquartered in New York, released three tips on defining the space of a rented apartment with area rugs.

According to Farshad Kalaty, a rug specialist at the company, for renters who do not own their apartment space, adding area rugs can add personality to an already bland space. Area rugs can be added overtop carpet, vinyl or wood flooring.

“Instead of dealing with wall-to-wall carpet woes or a floor that is entirely scratched up, find a rug that brings your personality and style into the space,” said Kalaty. “Not only will the room slowly start to transform, but often it can make the space feel larger.”

The company released three tips to assist summer apartment hunters with their search; emphasizing to look beyond the flooring of an apartment when choosing where to sign a lease because it can be altered with an area rug.

-Hide Dated Flooring

“Don’t let old flooring stand in the way if the apartment is otherwise perfect,” exclaimed Kalaty. Area rugs can easily hide stains or dated flooring that is less than ideal for a renter. If the flooring is carpet, Kalaty warns to select a thinner area rug to prevent guests from tripping on the layered area and also add proper padding under the area rug.

For those who want to hide more than just a small area of the flooring, Kalaty suggests changing the entire look of the room by purchasing a large area rug that comes within a foot or less on all four walls. The rug should be anchored with furniture to prevent sliding.

-Make the Space Appear Larger

For apartments with small living rooms, apartment renters can place a small area rug in the communal space with furniture filling the space around it to create a circle of space. But remember, less is more in transitional spaces that help apartment goers travel between rooms.

-Zoning

If the apartment has an open floor concept, apartment renters will want to define each sub-space or zone with an area rug to show where the space begins and ends within the entirety of the space.

To do this, first identify the needs of the people using the space. Then, define the zones with the ultimate goal of function over beauty. Start with the area rug and then anchor it with the furniture.
