Indonesian cotton imports increase slightly in Jan-May'14

The imports of cotton (HS code 52) by Indonesia increased slightly by 1.54 percent year-on-year to US$1.118 billion in January-May 2014, compared to imports of $1.101 billion made during the same period of last year, the data from Statistics Indonesia showed.
 
In May 2014, Indonesia imported $227.3 million worth of cotton, showing a decline of 18.44 percent over April 2014 imports of $278.7 million, as per the data.
 
Cotton accounted for 2 percent share in Indonesia’s overall non-oil and gas imports in the first five months of the current year.
 
Indonesia imports cotton for its flourishing textile and clothing industry, which makes a significant contribution to Indonesia’s economy, in the form of providing employment as well as earning foreign exchange.
 
The textile sector employment in Indonesia is estimated at about 1.55 million, and another 570,000 people are employed in the apparel sector.
