Rains abundant in Indian cotton growing areas - ICF

In Andhra Pradesh, rains have been delayed but are in abundance in most parts of the state. There has been a good increase in cotton sowing as many farmers had shifted from soya to cotton. The price for good quality 29 mm Bunny is Rs.39,500/-spot per candy while in Warangal price for good quality 29mm Bunny is Rs.40,500/-spot per candy.

In Guntur, 30mm Bunny is priced at Rs.41,000/- spot per candy. Ginners are reluctantly selling their cotton due to the declining trend in prices.

Karnataka saw timely rains and saved the standing crop in areas surrounding Raichur. There is a small quantity of Bunny cotton arriving in some small pockets of Karnataka at present in areas surrounding Bellary and Gokak.

The price quoted for the new crop is Rs.40,000/-spot per candy. The new crop DCH-32 in areas surrounding Ranebennur and Chitradurga is priced at Rs.50,500/-spot per candy.

Cotton sowing is progressing well and the cotton plants are in good shape in Tamil Nadu. Rain is continuing in various parts of Tamil Nadu and may continue till Deepawali. As per seed suppliers, around 600,000 packets of cotton seeds were already sold in the state.

Many of the farmers are shifting to cotton since soya & maize prices are down. Drip irrigation is gaining popularity, which will help conserve water for irrigation. Mills demand is persisting but power cuts are back in Tamil Nadu, as energy produced from wind mills is weakening. Cotton crop arrivals are almost nil here.

In the international market, Cotlook ‘A’ Index has been stable at around 75 cents per lbs for the last fortnight. The sudden drop in cotton prices worldwide has led to a drop in demand for yarn in export as everybody seems to be treading cautiously to avoid further losses.

Chinese cotton imports may be restricted to approved quota levels due to China’ import controls and Chinese cotton acreage may be less by 8.70% for 2014-15 season, while in India, cotton acreage is galloping, which can help India overtake China in cotton production in the near future.

Columbia said it will promote organic cotton and Kenya may promote its cotton industry. In Nigeria cotton seeds are being distributed freely, while in Brazil cotton prices showed firm tendency. (AR)
