The Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pankaj Saran, inaugurated the ‘Denims and Jeans Expo’ which began in Dhaka, Bangladesh by saying that the exhibition is a shining example of Bangladesh's emergence as a global garment manufacturer and exporter.

Among others, the inaugural function was also attended by Atiqul Islam, President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and top officials of denim fabric producers who are exhibiting at the trade show.

24 denim fabrics producing companies from Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Germany, Sri Lanka, Brazil and China are taking part in the trade show, which has been organised by an India-based denim portal ‘DenimsandJeans’.

Pankaj Saran said, “Bangladesh is a serious player now and can't be ignored.” He also appreciated Bangladesh's progress in meeting the highest standards of global buyers by producing apparels of the highest quality standards.

Julien Eickelmann from Brazil-based Vicunha, one of the largest Latin American denim fabric suppliers said his company seeks to hike its business with Bangladesh as buyers are shifting business to Bangladesh from other countries.

“Our main focus is to expanding our business in a growing and important market like Bangladesh and to do so we have a warehouse in Sri Lanka that helps us offer quick service to Bangladeshi denim apparel producers,” he added.

Atiqul Islam said Bangladesh is addressing three main issues; workplace safety, eco-friendly products and building better infrastructure in order to garner more business. We have also gained a positive image through the Accord and Alliance.”

“The Rana Plaza building collapse is a unique example of how a country can re-emerge as a vibrant destination after going through a disaster, which spoilt its standing and image in the global market,” he added.

According to statistics from the denim portal, Bangladesh exported about 74 million units of denim garments to the US and some 140 million pieces to Europe in 2013 and was also the biggest global exporters in men’s denim jeans to Europe the same year. (AR)
