More than 17 local and international designers showcased their creativity at the just held three-day-long installment of the east African catwalk extravaganza Swahili Fashion Week 2014.

Held in Tanzania, the event featured a ready-to-wear collection from Christine Zimba, the Tanzanian designer behind the label Kiki’s Fashion. Enhanced with bold revealing necklines and vibrantly coloured prints, the range featured long sweeping red gowns, sheer black skirts with asymmetrical hemlines and embroidered short-sleeved pristine white dresses.

Inspired from the enamel plate collection of her late mother, the Zimbabwean designer Sabina Mutsvati showed an unconventional range titled Ndiro Dzinondifungisa Amai Vangu (which translates to ‘plates that remind me of my mother’ in English).

Replete with circle and rectangular framed hems, the featured short and long length dresses paired with strapless bodices were based on colours like passionate red, electric blue, warm yellow and metallic tones.

In addition to the aforementioned names, home-grown labels like Asia Idarous Khamsin and Jamilla Vera Swai also highlighted their exclusive ensembles alongside foreign brands including Afrikadirndl (Austria), Taati Sibolile Maison (Namibia), Jose Rui Lopez (Angola), Innocent Dorkenoo (Ghana) and Palse (South Africa).
