DSM Fibre Intermediates, a leading producer and supplier of caprolactam, the raw material for polyamide 6 (nylon), is planning maintenance shutdown at two acrylonitrile (ACN) lines this year.

“Both the ACN lines are located at Geleen, in the Netherlands, and will be down for 4 weeks each, with a 3 weeks’ overlap period,” a company official told fibre2fashion.

“Maintenance turnaround for the first line will begin in the last week of May 2015, and the turnaround at the second line will start a week later,” the official further informed.

The capacity of both lines together is 275,000 tons per year.

DSM Fibre has production facilities on three continents—Europe, North America, and Asia—with a total production capacity of nearly 900 kilotons per year. With its market share of 25 per cent, DSM is the leading supplier in the European merchant ACN market while globally it ranks third.

ACN is a key ingredient for bright, fashionable acrylic textile and carpet fibres, and its application in a wide range of valuable specialty products like carbon fibres is rapidly growing. (RKS)
