China's cotton imports witness sharp decline in 2014/15

The quantity of cotton imported by China witnessed a sharp decline in the first six months of the ongoing cotton season 2014/15 that began on September 1, 2014.

China imported a total of 881,700 tons of cotton till February 28, 2015, during the current cotton season, registering a drop of 47 per cent year-on-year, according to customs statistics. In comparison, China had imported 3.003 million tons of cotton in 2013-14 season.

In February 2015, China imported 159,100 tons of cotton, down 2,100 tons or 1.3 per cent from January 2015 imports, and down 35.3 per cent compared to the same month of last year.

The average import price in February worked out to US$ 1,698 per ton, up $23 per ton or 1.4 per cent from January, and a decline of 15.4 per cent from February 2014.

During the first two months of 2015, China’s cotton imports stood at 320,300 tons, showing a decrease of 40.5 per cent year-on-year.

In February 2015, China’s imports of cotton from both India and Uzbekistan declined. However, India continued to be the largest exporter of cotton to China with a share of 29 per cent, China Cotton Association said.

The average import price of cotton from United States and Uzbekistan increased by 5.81 per cent and 7.6 per cent respectively, while the average price of cotton from India, Australia and Brazil fell by 3.69 per cent, 4.33 per cent, and 5.75 per cent, respectively. (RKS)
