Sustainability is a reality say speakers at SDC conference

Paul Cowell (Archroma) made a very interesting power point presentation on ‘Natural Waste-Based Colorants and Balancing the Cost of Sustainable Production. He spoke on natural waste based colourants or Earth Colours and how to balance the cost of sustainability. He also explained about One Way Calculator that enables fast and informed decision-making based on precise data measurement and analysis.
 
Presenting on ‘Innovations in Enzymes’, Jayant Khera (Novozymes South Asia) stated that enzymes are used practically in everything in our daily lives. Speaking on biopolishing, he gave an example of the Stay New Concept which is used as a combi-process. He also highlighted the application of low temperature cellulose, low temperature amylase in bleaching and dyeing of denim.
 
The second session started with Ernst Siewers (Dyecoo) speaking on ‘Sustainable Innovation – Waterless Dyeing’. Dyecoo being a leader in carbon dioxide based dyeing, Siewers shared his experience and technology in the field with the audience. He also touched upon global water scarcity and explained science of waterless dyeing.
 
‘3-D Printing: An Emerging Technology’ was the topic presented by Kiran Prayagi (Graphic Arts Technology & Education). Prayagi gave detailed presentation with several examples about 3-D modelling which is normally called 3D printing. The presentation included updates on software, printers and applications areas of this technique.
 
Prasad Pant (NimkarTek Technical Services) spoke about several international tools to measure sustainability impacts of production and processing techniques in his presentation on ‘New indices and tools to address sustainability challenges’.
 
Third session began with Sandeep Patel (Arvind Enviro) making a technically enlightening presentation on ‘Liquid Waste Management’, which was much appreciated by the audience. Szilard Szarvas (LS & Co) made a colourful presentation on denim’s present and future, informing the audience about the markets and trends in this industry. 
 
In his presentation on ‘Sustainability and Future Trends in Denim’, Sai Navneethan (Jeanologia) spoke on sustainability, compliance and traceability in denim industry. “We need advanced technology and better techniques but also a tool to measure the impact,” he said. He also mentioned a case study done using Environment Impact Measuring (EIM) software which will help measure water, energy and the cost of chemicals. Giving the example of waterless dyeing and TRU-BLU range of denims, he said that in the future, this will drive the change to give value added products.
