Chief minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis said eight more new textile mills would come up in the Vidarbha region, which has seen a spate of suicides by cotton farmers in recent years.

According to media reports, the chief minister said one new textile mill would begin operations within a few days in Nandgaon, located in the Vidarbha belt.

The chief minister was speaking after inaugurating the Agriculture Development Exhibition and Workshop being held at Amravati.

“For strengthening cotton farmers financially, setting up of cotton textile processing units along with facilities of irrigation is necessary,” Fadnavis said.

“Emphasis will be given on setting up textile mills at various places and mainly cotton growing regions of Vidarbha and Marathwada,” he added.

“Alongside, stress will also be laid on completing irrigation projects in Vidarbha so that farmers did not need to rely on just rains for which we have sanctioned Rs 3,500 crore,” he informed. (AR)
