Rajeev Arora, former executive director of the African Cotton and Textiles Industries Federation (ACTIF), has been appointed as the Advisor for textiles and apparel at the Kenyan Ministry of Industrialisation and Enterprise Development, national broadcaster KBC has announced.

Arora has over 36 years of experience in managing 100 per cent export-oriented facilities, and overseeing vertically integrated manufacturing, inspection of finished garments and appropriate shipping for timely delivery.

His experience includes more than six years in managing cotton value-addition activities across the African continent.

The government’s move to appoint an Advisor for the textiles and apparel industry comes after the US extended the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) for another ten years. Under AGOA, sub-Saharan African nations can export their textiles and garments duty-free into the US.

Terming the opportunity provided under AGOA as timely, Arora said the government is keen to increase exports to unprecedented levels. He also expressed optimism that Kenya will become a textile and apparel hub, according to KBC.

Following the AGOA-extension, the Kenyan government plans to create 100,000 jobs in the textile-apparel sector and earn $1 billion in revenue in three years. (RKS)
