Pakistan's textile exports dip marginally in FY15

The exports of textiles and garments from Pakistan declined marginally by 1.78 per cent year-on-year in the fiscal year 2014-15 that ended on June 30, 2015, according to the latest data.

During July-June 2014-15, Pakistan earned $13.476 billion from textiles and apparel exports compared to exports worth $13.720 billion made in the previous fiscal 2013-14, data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics showed.

However, the exports of value-added clothing sector showed positive growth during the twelve-month period. Category-wise, knitwear exports grew by 5.37 per cent year-on-year to $2.416 billion, while exports of non-knit readymade garments were up by 10.05 per cent to $2.101 billion.

Among textiles, raw cotton exports fetched $147.104 million during the fiscal, showing a drop of 28.29 per cent compared to exports of $205.136 million made during the previous fiscal. Likewise, cotton yarn exports fell by 7.76 per cent to $1.842 billion, as against exports of $1.997 billion made during the last fiscal.

Exports of cotton fabric dropped 11.38 per cent to $2.454 billion during the period under review, while bedwear exports declined by 1.97 per cent to $2.095 billion, the data showed.

On the import side, synthetic fibre imports surged 20.11 per cent year-on-year to $530.412 million, whereas imports of synthetic and artificial silk yarn witnessed a growth of 10.12 per cent to register $681.690 million. This shows that textile enterprises have increased the use of synthetic fibre and yarn in recent months.

Meanwhile, the value of textile machinery imports during the period decreased by 25.06 per cent year-on-year to $449.329 million, showing a decrease in new investment. (RKS)
