Ground breaking news from Shopko

Shopko has some groundbreaking news for Northeast Wisconsin.

The retail merchandise chain broke ground earlier this month on the construction of the first new Shopko store to be built in six years. The new store in Suamico, Wis., signals a new growth phase for the company which has plans to open several more new stores in the coming years. Existing stores will also be remodeled and “re-Grand Opened” with Shopko's new and updated look.

“We are extremely excited to begin construction of a new Shopko store in Suamico, a rapidly growing area of the Green Bay community,” said Mike MacDonald, Shopko chairman and chief executive officer.

The new store prototype incorporates a number of elements that will make our customers' shopping experience both stimulating and efficient. The store's color, lighting and fixturing will allow customers to easily see the merchandise and visualize how it might look in her home or on her body.

The store layout will, of course, feature our Pharmacy and Optical Center at the very front of the store for added convenience and both of the Health Services departments will feature comfortable customer seating zones. The aisle pattern and signing in the store is designed to make the customer shopping experience very efficient.

All parts of the store will allow for navigation by strollers and carts. The 80,000 square foot size of the Suamico store makes it large enough to carry our full assortment yet not so big as to overwhelm our customers.

Shopko opened its first store in Green Bay, Wis., in 1962. Since then, the company has expanded to include 132 stores across the Midwest, Mountain and Pacific Northwest regions. Three Shopko Express Rx stores, a neighborhood pharmacy and convenience store concept, opened in Wisconsin in 2005.

The new store will be part of a 28 acre development being led by Midwest Expansion. The store is projected to open in the spring of 2008.
