Foreign trade turnover falls in Aug

According to the preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, in August 2007 the Estonian foreign trade turnover made up 23.9 billion kroons. The trade deficit was 3.4 billion kroons and it decreased compared to the previous month as well as to the same month of the previous year.

Compared to August 2006, the foreign trade turnover decreased 1% and, compared to July 2007 it increased by 1%. The trade deficit decreased to 3.4 billion kroons, in August 2006 it was 3.5 billion kroons and in July 2007 3.6 billion kroons.

In August the exports were 10.25 billion kroons (43%) and imports 13.66 billion kroons (57%). Compared to August 2006, the exports of goods decreased 1%, and compared to July 2007 it increased 2%. Compared to August 2006, the imports of goods also decreased 1% and were on the same level compared to July 2007.

In August the share of EU countries (EU-27)b in exports accounted for 74% and of the CIS countries 12% of total exports (in August of the previous year the indicators were 64% and 11%, respectively). The main destination countries in exports were Finland (20% of total exports), Sweden (14%) and Latvia (12%).

In August the share of EU countries (EU-27) in imports was 80% and the CIS countries 8% of total imports (in August of the previous year the indicators were 75% and 15%, respectively). The main consignment countries in imports were Finland (17% of total imports), Germany (13%) and Sweden (11%).

Compared to August of the previous year, there was an increase mainly in the exports of agricultural products and (by 158 million kroons), of transport equipment (by 138 million kroons) and of raw materials and products of chemical industry (by 116 million kroons).

At the same time, there was a considerable decrease only in the exports of machinery and equipment (by 437 million kroons).

Compared to August of the previous year, there was an increase mainly in the imports of transport equipment (by 304 million kroons), of textiles and products thereof (by 128 million kroons). At the same time, there was a remarkable decrease only in the imports of machinery and equipment (by 482 million kroons).
