The National Craft Council (NCC) has predicted that the year 2008 is likely to be a good year for local handicraft industry especially since Sri Lanka has undertaken a number of promotional schemes and activities.

Official from the industry reported that plans are already being implemented to train the handicraft producers in a way that high demanded products are manufactured at a greater speed. NCC is also going to take charge of the training unit of Laksala to serve the purpose.

As a matter of fact, handicraft producers fail to market their products largely because the goods do not possess the required standards of quality. To improve upon this, NCC will essentially guide the artisans and ensure that they find a potential market and receive their rightly deserved share of profit.

The Sigiriya Handicrafts Village Project is also likely to get started this year and adequate facilities will be catered to modify the village into a tourist center. A sum of Rs4 million has been funded to complete this project.
