Arvind Ltd which was initially laying focus on production of denim jeans and Tees is presently venturing for the cultivation of organic fruits and textile.
Arvind has already commenced its long planned project for organic cotton farming in Akola, Maharashtra and is now heading for the production of organic fruits and vegetables.
The Arvind Organic & Fairtrade Cotton project will make the company self-sufficient in organic cotton that would in turn help capture markets that shows a growing demand for the material.
In an exclusive interview with Fibre2fashion, official from the company stated “This is the second time Arvind is venturing into organic farming as part of backward integration for value added products.”
A Bangalore based agro-consultancy firm has been appointed by Arvind to work out its future course of action while it has already invested a sum of Rs40 lakh in the venture.
It has cultivated nearly 1200 bales of organic cotton over nearly 1200 acres and has identified another 10,000 acres of irrigated land at Akola to produce organic cotton cultivation with higher yield.
Besides, Arvind has also established a trust managed by farmers and contributed Rs25000 per bale of organic cotton, a 20 percent premium on the prevailing prices, for cotton cultivated under the fairtrade project.
