Created to celebrate the achievements of Sir William Henry Perkin, the man who discovered the first synthetic dye at the age of 18, the Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC) has officially opened the Perkin Suite at its Bradford headquarters.

The opening ceremony was carried out in front of a capacity audience by Bob Trotter, president of the Cotton Industry War Memorial Trust, a major benefactor of the project and a long-time sponsor of the Society's Colour Experience (formerly the Colour Museum).

The highlight of the evening was a reconstruction of a lecture first given by the acclaimed 1960s artist and colour theorist, Sydney Harry. Called 'The Magic of Colour' and delivered by his eldest daughter Brigid, it used many of his original props and materials.

Available for hire, the Perkin Suite itself is a unique venue designed to cater for a variety of different functions and events. Comprising a large meeting room with adjacent lounge, it can accommodate up to 100 people theatre style and 40 boardroom style.

The suite is equipped with the latest audio visual equipment, full blackout facilities, kitchen and food serving areas. The smaller lounge is lavishly appointed with leather seating making it an ideal venue for small, informal meetings and interviews.

A particular feature of the Perkin Suite is its unrivalled display of Perkin memorabilia associated with the life and work of the Victorian scientific and industrial pioneer who is generally regarded as the founding father of the modern chemical industry.
