Shri G.K.Gupta at Export Award Function of SRTEPC

I join my colleague Shri Sanjeev Saran, Chairman of the Council to extend a very warm welcome to the Hon'ble Minister of Textile, Textile Secretary and all other dignitaries present this evening.
It is indeed a very special day for all of us when we have the privilege and honor of having Shri Shankersinh Vaghelaji, Hon'ble Textile Minister giving away the awards for 2006-07.
Friends we all Know that, the textiles and clothing industry occupies a significant place in India's export and also economy. Being the largest nett. foreign exchange earner, contributing to over 20 per cent of India's exports and 14 per cent of industrial output, accounting for more than 5 per cent of GDP and providing direct employment to 38 million people, primarily the weaker sections.
In 2006-07, against the target of $19.73 billion of textile exports, actual achievement was $19.62 billion. The annual target set for the current fiscal is $25.1 billion of textile exports and our Hon'ble Minister exudes hope to achieve it.
Sir, this sector is the worst hit by the rupee appreciation and I, on behalf of textile fraternity, would like to compliment you for your considerate attitude towards textile exporters. You have been kind enough to take textile exporters to Prime Minister and Finance Minister in order to rescue them from ongoing situation arising out of rupee appreciation.
Friends, I feel privileged to be associated with the Annual Export Award Function of SRTEPC. This Council had been my work place in the capacity as Chairman and being here today among you all is indeed a very special moment for me. My heartiest congratulations to each of my Friends who has been conferred with the award. Your efforts to achieve outstanding export performance in such a tough scenario are undoubtedly commendable.
