Rekayasa-TEC to raise Pertamina propylene production thru ROPP

Pertamina has signed a contract with Consortium between PT Rekayasa Industri (Rekayasa) and Toyo Engineering Corporation (TEC) to develop RCC Off-Gas To Propylene Project (ROPP) in Refining Unit VI Balongan valued USD 283 million through procurement process.

By developing ROPP, Pertamina will increase added value to their organization by processing butane gas produced by Pertamina UP-VI Balongan. It will then be further processed into Propylene. It is expected that ROPP will increase Propylene production capacity of 179.000 metric ton/year. This was conducted upon the increase of the demand on propylene as a raw material to make plastic.

The development of ROPP has been based on a scope of work Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning (EPCC) consist of developing unit process, utility facilities and offsite facility. ROPP uses Olefins Conversion Technology from Lummus Technology Inc, USA (OCT) as main technology process and is expected to produce propylene in October 2010.

ROPP is a step forward on the current processing technology since it was developed integrated with oil refinery, while nowadays many petrochemical plants are built separately from oil refinery. Besides, ROPP has become the first OCT project developed by Indonesian Human Resources and in Asean region.

Product development in order to increase the refinery performance as well as to improve strategic alliances with domestic and international business institutions has become a part of transformation programs currently conducted by Pertamina.
