China & India to be consumption markets of tomorrow

In India, half the population is under the age of 25, which also represents a potential for considerable demographic and economic growth for the thirty years to come; today apparel consumption in India is estimated at 30 billion euros, or about half that of the Chinese market.

In light of these prospects, France should adopt an offensive strategy by reinforcing its exports to Asia. In 2007, European exports to Asia have represented as little as 8% of total French clothing exports and 7% of textile exports. According to Chinese customs statistics, France accounts for only about 2% of apparel imports to China in value, as opposed to 11% for Italy, which is the front runner among European suppliers.

As for textiles, France's share is only 1% as opposed to 2% for Italy; China's main textile suppliers are its Asian neighbours: Japan, Korea and Taiwan, which account for 40% of these imports.

Improving conditions for European textiles' access to emerging markets therefore constitutes one of the major issues for the coming years. For, unlike China, which significantly lowered its customs tariffs when it joined the World Trade Organization, India has maintained its extremely high tariff barriers.

Projects for bilateral free-trade projects between the European Union and India - and South Korea and ASEAN-member countries as well - should, in this context, make it possible to guarantee European exporters better access to these markets.
