The Khadi and Village Industries Board (KVIB) of Jammu and Kashmir has set up nearly 124 industrial units during 2007-08.
Loans amounting to Rs231.13 lakh were disbursed by state banks while Rs69.212 lakh were allotted by the board in form of subsidy.

These industrial units function primarily to achieve the objective of training artisans in skills of modern design, embroidery, cutting and tailoring, packing, dyeing and furnishing.

Besides, what makes these units unique in their operation is the fact that they aim to revive traditional art and craft on modern technical lines. This effort will enable domestic craftsmen to promote their products on an international level.

A part of the Govt policy entails that after the completion of the training, artisans will be financed for their endeavour to generate income under the Rural Employment Generation Program.
A similar initiative was taken keeping the rural women in mind. A three-month training program was organised for imparting training especially to those living below poverty line.

The program was inaugurated on February 27 and saw participation by a large number of rural folk.
