Exports of broader wool records a smaller decline

Mar '08
Data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has shown the volume of Australian wool exports in November 2007 (clean equivalents) dropped moderately compared with the same month in 2006. On the other hand, the value of exported wool rose solidly year-on-year.

A similar trend in wool exports appeared in the first five months of this season. The volume of clean wool exports fell year-on-year while the value of exported wool rose compared with the same period the previous season. This trend can be attributed to a shrinking supply of wool in Australia and rising auction wool prices.

For exports by micron category, falls occurred across the whole range in the first five months of this season by volume, although the 19 and finer micron category fell only slightly year-on-year.

The biggest fall by volume was recorded in the largest export micron category, 20-23 micron. Exports of broader wool (24 to 27 micron) recorded a smaller decline, whereas the 28 micron and broader wool category saw greater declines year-on-year.

In value terms, the 19 micron and finer and 24 to 27 micron categories rose year-on-year from July to November 2007. In contrast the value of exported wool in 20-23 micron and 28 micron and broader wool categories fell year-on-year.
